It seems that there are easier platforms out there to blog with, perhaps Blogger, Google blogs, other ones I won’t pretend to know anything about.  The reason why they are “easier” is because they have less features.  When I first got involved in blogging I was very intimidated by Wordpress but decided to jump in with the big dogs anyway.  I am sure glad I did!  I started out with one blog on the free Wordpress site and within a few months had several self-hosted Wordpress blogs that I was able to customize to my liking.    Briefly, here’s why I would chose Wordpress over other blogs:

The variety of themes and templates is neverending.  You will only be a needle in a haystack with Wordpress if you choose to be.  There are so many free themes out there and the ability to customize those themes once you choose one is priceless.   Note: a little knowledge of CSS is going to come into play here but, trust me, if you really want that background color changed you’ll dig in and figure it out like I did.

Another reason to chose Wordpress is the sheer volume of widgets available to integrate into your blog.  If it’s been thought of, or is the slightest bit cool or useful, there’s probably a Wordpress Widget for it.  This means that you can create a blog to fit your goals:  e-commerce, advertising, personal, information exchange, etc.  Widgets can hold ads, links, RSS feeds, Tweets, text, sign-up boxes, videos, slide shows… you get the point.  The great thing about a “widget” is that little or no programming experience is required to make them work for you.

Finally, you’re probably dwelling on mention of “CSS” and the “little or no programming experience” in the last paragraph.  Never fear.  There are so darn many Wordpress bloggers out there that you have an incredible pool of expertise and experience to draw on.  Wordpress does have support but also has user forums that willl get you most of the answers that you need… 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  There’s always a blogger out there ready and willing to help.

Finally, and then I’ll stop,  the search engines are quite fond of Wordpress.  It is a very SEO friendly application because it is well-organized and even comes with google sitemap and seo plugins.   Am I still intimidated by Wordpress?  You bet I am!  This thing goes so broad and so deep that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to say that I’ve “mastered it”.  But that’s what makes it so great, really.

When you are marketing a blog, you pretty much do it the same way that you would market a website. It is going to need keywords, and content. You can write the content yourself, or pay someone else to write it for you. That portion is completely up to you. Paid directories are a big part of small business blog marketing also. You can pay some directories to list your blog URL in their directory under the special category that it falls under. However, some of these even have specific qualifications that you must have to get in. Conform to all of the application steps, and you should be fine. Just don’t try to submit your blog to a directory that it doesn’t qualify for, or fit in.

Another essential thing to remember when you’re into small business blog marketing is that if anyone leaves you a comment on your blog, you should recognize it and respond. You can also comment on other blogs that are relevant to yours, and leave a link to your blog as well. This will help bring in visitors to your blog, and you will start to see more and more traffic.

Having contests are another way that you can market your blog.  Having contests on various things would be a lot of fun, and something that will keep your readers returning. Everyone likes to win things, and you can also make the award that you’re giving away relevant to the market you are promoting on your blog. Some don’t realize how effective this facet of blog marketing can be. While others are harvesting the rewards on an ongoing basis.

Another big facet of blog marketing is the track back feature. When you have the track back feature on your blog, you’re permitting other people to link to your blog. Maybe somebody has a post to post on their blog that is relevant to one of yours. They can use the talkback to your post, and send their readers to your blog so that they know what they are referring to. Another good thing to remember is that if someone leaves you a track back, it is a courtesy to return that to their blog if at all feasible.

Small business blog marketing is not rocket science, yet someone that has never marketed a single thing before in their life may have problems. If you have all of these tools and techniques in place, then chances are you’re driving some good traffic. If not, just keep working on it. Your hard work is going to pay off and you will be thankful that you did.

Small business blog marketing consists of blogging about your business. It unquestionably is a solid tool that, in most cases,  you should utilize to get your business out there and acknowledged by others.
