Facebook Datacenters – Mindblowing Numbers…
As I put more and more proposals and presentations together for businesses these days, I have an opportunity to delve a little bit deeper into the history, stats, and innerworkings of the social media system because that’s what everyone is really interested in right now. Not that I’m not interested in it too… I love social media. And big numbers.
Anyway, in my “delving”, I ran across this video about Facebook Datacenters that is just so awesome that I had to share it. I’ve actually watched it many times and I don’t generally do that. Here are a few stats that are well over 6 months old so feel free to multiply them by some obscene number to get the current rates:
The company’s data centers store more than 40 billion photos, and users upload 40 million new photos each day – about 2,000 photos every second. Not surprisingly, the racks are packed. The facility is using a raised-floor design, with no containment but generous spacing between racks. Facebook appears to be spending $20 million to $25 million a year for the data center space that houses its servers, according to an analysis of the company’s data center infrastructure. Here’s the very cool video:

This video was well-produced and very informative. Yeah, facebook is really making high waves now all over the world. I just can’t imagine how these guys do over with the millions of photo uploads everyday. Some web analytics expressed that facebook has also now become the modern portal for social media marketing. All people almost meet through facebook, even old friends and classmates have kept in touch through facebook.

I am a facebook fan as well. My day is not complete without checking my facebook account. My cousin, who is an SEO consultant of a search engine optimization company in Singapore, even believes that facebook is now the leading social networking sites all over the world. It is nice to note as well that some people are utilizing facebook for their web marketing online business.

The article is nice. Sorry to say, however, that in the world of web marketing, I am more of a Twitter fan.

Ha – yes, Mark. I actually prefer Twitter to Facebook as well. I think everyone has their favorites but the landscape on these sites changes daily. Check out how Facebook is copying a lot of aspects of the Twitter app now.

I agree with you guys, I think Twitter is better than Facebook. No offense to Facebook, I even heard good things about it. But, for me, as an SEO consultant who uses the internet all the time, Twitter says it best.

I understand why there are those who are really for Twitter…but I must say that I am really a Facebook follower. We should be glad that there are lots of social media consultants and social networking sites that we can keep in touch with our friends near or far.
